Spencer was born in Mobile, Alabama and grew up in Jackson, Mississippi. After a short period in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Spencer returned to Alabama in 1995 to complete high school. He then attended the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama School of Law before opening his law firm with Craig Cargile in 2005.

A significant portion of Spencer's practice focuses on criminal defense, including everything from traffic tickets and DUI's, to drug charges and serious felonies. He has dedicated himself to providing the best criminal defense available to those under investigation or prosecution for state and federal offenses.

Spencer is a member of The National Trial Lawyers: Top 40 under 40. This is an invitation only membership extended exclusively to those individuals who exemplify superior qualifications, trial results, and leadership as a young trial lawyer.

Spencer was also selected as a 2014 Top 40 Under 40 Criminal Defense Lawyer in Alabama by the American Society of Legal Advocates ("ASLA"). The ASLA is also an invitation-only, nationwide organization of elite lawyers, drawing its membership from practicing attorneys who combine stellar legal credentials with a proven commitment to community engagement and the highest professional standards. ASLA selects less than 1.5% of all licensed lawyers nationwide, featuring no more than 100 lawyers per state – and 40 lawyers under the age of 40 – in each area of practice or specialty, with specialties varying per state depending on the number of practicing lawyers.

In addition to criminal defense, Spencer also practices SSI/Disability law and in other various general practice areas.

Spencer currently resides in Birmingham with his wife, Amanda, and their son, Sam. Spencer and his family attend Prince of Peace Catholic Church.
